God Frowns on Blogging

A few Southern Baptist leaders have hinted that blogging is a waste of time, but apparently they forgot a few paragraphs of their conversation with God on the topic. Fortunately, the Reformed Church of God, a small but extremely holy denomination, has obtained the full counsel of God regarding the vice of blogging:

"Blogging has become a socially accepted practice - just as are dating seriously too young, underage drinking and general misbehaving."

Blogging "often makes the blogger feel good or makes him feel as if his opinion counts - when it is mostly mindless blather!"

"Propriety, decorum and decency are not elements considered on blogs. People simply blurt things out, without considering the contents or consequences."

Busted. Well, this stream of socially-acceptable blather must come to an end. I'll be hanging up this whole blogging thing next week. But first...a few more sarcastic posts blurts.

The operative word here is "sarcasm." :)

so was there sarcasm in the "I'll be hanging up this whole blogging thing next week" line too?

This brings up an interesting question: "is there anything that cannot become sin?"
I'd guess right off the bat, that the answer is "No", with the caveat that I am only considering specific actions, so that if someone were to say, "What about loving God, or loving my wife?!? Hmmm?!? What about that?!", I would reply that loving God isn't a specific action at all, (and then I would ask them what the heck they were doing loving my wife.)

Yes, I intend to keep on blurting blather for the time being. I see I need to be more up front with my sarcasm. ;)

I've never had trouble with insomnia until I started blogging!

Careful with that insomnia, Cory. It can take over your life. On the pro side, you can write a lot of posts in the time you normally spend sleeping - no distractions! Just kidding.

Good call on this. I would cautiously say "no" as well, with the qualifications you mention. I would also be quick to point out that most anything, outside of biblically-condemned practices, can be done to the glory of God. Blogging goes in that category, along with some other "controversial" pastimes...

Incidentally, I'm planning on going to KU's Late Night this evening, "to the glory of God."

No worries mate! You can blog without fear. Evangelicals out here on the west coast think "God Blogging" is worthy of an October conference. Take a look at the line-up of plenary and breakout session speakers here.

You may even find a few of your favorite bloggers on the blogroll of registered attendees. Gasp!

Great thoughts! I got to thinking about your post. It seems that(good) blogging is a melding of magazine writing, journalling, and instant messaging. Take magazines for example. No one I know would say that all magazines are bad and a waste of time to read. Certain magazines, obviously, have sin dripping from their covers; yet, others glorify God.

If you consider journalling, many spiritually mature teachers suggest it as a way to graple with what God is teaching you; you can sort your thoughts, reflect, etc. Blogging actually improves on this because you are more likely to go back and read what you wrote online than what you wrote in your journal two days ago. You may even re-examine your thoughts as people respond to your posts.

Instant messaging can certainly be used for less than moral purposes (I grew up with the infernal thing...teenagers beware IM), but the interaction it fosters and dialogue--when done for God's glory--are extremely valuable.

I have grown not to admire the way Evangelicals use blanket statements instead of taking the time and effort to find the gracious, moderate path.

Oh, wait. That was a blanket statement. Maybe blogging is a tool of the Devil.

Good to know someone has my back on this. One of these days I need to go to a blog conference...preferably after I gain some more fame and prestige. ;)

I really liked your thoughts on this, Tom. Good, humorous analysis. I quoted you in this post.
