Lunatic Humility

Humility

Yesterday morning our church service featured an announcement regarding C.J. Mahaney’s book,
Humility: True Greatness. A couple weeks ago, the church had provided copies of the book free to those who would commit to read it by March 12. (Obviously, Lindsay and I jumped at the free book offer, although Lindsay subsequently monopolized Humility by stuffing it in her school bag.)

As it turned out, just one copy of the book was left. Therefore the announcement was made that anyone interested could adopt the book, with an extension of the reading deadline, of course. They would just need to sign the
“commitment papers…”

I started laughing, but the phrase seemed strangely fitting because humility could easily be approached within an ‘asylum’ framework these days. We’ve got Survivor and The Apprentice. We have shows where chefs face off with an evil gleam in their eyes, dueling with ladles and colanders to see who will be the master chef.

Humility, on the other hand, is simply insane. It’s the kind of insanity that God adores.
