Creating New Idioms

Aidan had been giving us a hard time all day (he’s really into this “being wakeful” thing) and finally he seemed ready to give his exuberant spirits a rest after an incredibly big meal for someone his size.

It was immediately after Aidan had eaten and settled down and we breathed a sigh of relief that Lindsay pulled a new idiom out of the playfully subversive entity she calls her mind.

“Aidan just ate like a Baptist preacher at a buffet line.”

Snap.

Moments like this make can you reevaluate your position in life (Am I attending a Baptist seminary? Yes. Am I on a Baptist payroll? Nope.) and leave you feeling wistful.

Why didn’t I think of that? I wonder if it's an idiom with staying power.

That's a good one, though you have have experiences with Baptist Potluck suppers to understand it. When the EMBLOS first arrived in this country and we attended some potlucks at our church, one of her first comments was about Baptists eating. My response: It's sublimated drinking, dancing and card playing.

Cheers.
